WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB REPORT –
Last Monday’s nine-hole Vets comp was won by Bob Moore with 32 nett on a c/b from Roy Sanders, followed by John Burkinshaw 34, and Ian Hitchman, John Hazell, Bernie Mogford, Ron Culgan, Phil Powell, Grahame Winson and Bob Alexander, on 35 nett. Tony Brunskill claimed Thursday’s event with 32 nett, a shot clear of Tony Pollard, Hedley Chapman and Les Hodges, followed by Mick Tilden and Bernie Mogford on 34 nett.
The ladies played the first round of their Foursomes Championship on Tuesday, with Jenny Hazell and Jan Marks winning the scratch event with 96, from Lorraine Hickey and June Rootes, 101 on a c/b. Best h/cap score went to Billie Johnstone and Pat Tooze with 72.5 nett, from Marg Hogan and Janine Fitzgerald 74.5 nett. NTPs to Kitty Howe and June Rootes. The girls returned for the second and final round on Friday, and once again the formidable team of Jenny Hazell and Jan Marks were too good with 97 off the stick, from Carol Martin and Monica Kember 101. Billie Johnstone and Pat Tooze once again won the h/cap event with 77.5 nett, from Sandra Donohue and Trish Gray on 78.5 nett. NTP’s to Billie Johnstone and Marg Hogan. Well done to Championship winners, Jenny Hazell and Jan Marks, and runners-up Pat Tooze and Billie Johnstone, although Pat and Billie did manage to turn to tables on Jenny and Jan in the 36-hole h/cap event.
In Wednesday’s stableford A Grade event, Peter Barnes scored 40 pts for a win from Grahame Winson, 39 pts. Doug Emery got home on a c/b from Col Smith to take care of B Grade, while the NTP’s went to Andrew White, Peter Lyons and Col Smith. Without a doubt though, the highlight of the day was Barney’s 100 metre sprint to the 18th green, after doing his very own version of the ‘brown snake shuffle’ around a little wriggler, about 60 metres from the tee.
Saturday provided no such entertainment, but the conditions were still terrific. In A Grade, tennis guru, Roman Adamcewicz scored 35 stableford pts to win on a c/b from Bob Alexander, while Billy Whalan fired up for 43 pts to win B Grade from Col Smith. Maurie Hogan also played well for 40 pts to collect in C Grade, from Frank Veliscek on a c/b. NTP’s to Phil Harrison, Bob McKenzie and Kyle Harrison.
Sunday’s 9-hole comp went to Gary Rake with 24 pts, from Peter Austin, 20 pts. Balls to 17 pts. Players are reminded it is an 18-hole event next week.
